Keith Reimer Distinguished Lecture Award
Share |
In July 2001, the International Council created a named lecture that was intended to become a highlight of ISHR World Congresses and Section Meetings. The Lecture was named the "Keith Reimer Distinguished Lecture”, in honor of Dr Reimer’s contributions to scientific knowledge and to the ISHR. Dr Reimer was a leader in the study of myocardial ischemia, and for 25 years moved that field forward in many important ways, including the discovery of ischemic preconditioning. In addition, Dr Reimer had a long history of contributions to the North American Section of the ISHR, which he served first as Secretary and then as President. It is the intent of this Lecture to honor Dr Reimer’s memory and to recognize all that he has done for cardiovascular science and for our Society, as well as to enhance the content of ISHR scientific meetings by providing a high-quality presentation by an internationally leading investigator.

The Keith Reimer Distinguished Lecture is held at each World Congress of the ISHR. In non-Congress years, the Lecture is held at the annual meeting of one of 6 ISHR Sections on a rotating basis. The speaker, however, is selected from the entire membership of the Society. The Lecture is intended to be a high profile event and should be scheduled as a keynote plenary lecture. The International Council selects the speaker. The topic of the Lecture should be in the field of ischemia, coronary hemodynamics, vascular biology, cardiac metabolism, or contractile mechanisms, including excitation-contraction coupling, but the content should be chosen to be of broad interest to the cardiovascular community.

The recipient of any Distinguished Lecture Award (The Keith Reimer Distinguished Lecture, The Janice Pfeffer Distinguished Lecture, The President's Distinguished Lecture) or Society award (Peter Harris Award, Research Achievement Award, Outstanding Investigator Award) is ineligible to receive another Distinguished Lecture Award or Society Award for a period of 6 years.

Nominees and nominators must be active members of the ISHR at the time of nomination.

The speaker is reimbursed for travel expenses up to a maximum of $1,500 [to include coach class travel and a maximum of 3 nights’ hotel accommodation] when the Award recipient delivers the Lecture at his/her own local Section meeting, and up to a maximum of $3,000 when inter-continental travel is required, and receives a plaque and a $1,000 honorarium. Additionally, the speaker’s registration fee for the pertinent World Congress or Section Meeting is paid by the ISHR. A photograph and biosketch of the speaker is published in Heart News and Views and posted on the ISHR website.

This Lecture is funded by a generous contribution from Chugai-Pharma.
