The deadline for receipt of nominations for the 2019 Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award is June 15, 2019.  This Award lecture will be given at the 2020 ISHR-Latin American Section meeting.

The International Society for Heart Research invites nominations for the Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award. The presentation of this prestigious award is a highlight of the ISHR Section Meetings or the ISHR World Congress.

Purpose of the Award

The Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award recognizes a senior investigator with lifetime contributions of major discoveries in cardiovascular science. Thus, the Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award targets investigators who have made sustained contributions during a prolonged academic career as an internationally leading investigator (full or emeritus Professor or the equivalent; normally >60 years of age).

Nature of the Prize

The Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award is presented at the triennial ISHR World Congress or, in non-Congress years, at the annual meeting of one of 6 ISHR Sections on a rotating basis.  The awardee will present a major lecture, and will receive a $1,500 honorarium and a plaque. An announcement of this Award, along with a photograph and a biosketch, will be published in Heart News and Views and posted on the ISHR website. The Award includes free meeting registration and reimbursement for travel expenses up to a maximum of $1,500 (to include coach class travel and a maximum of 3 nights’ hotel accommodation) when the Award recipient delivers the lecture within the geographic area of his/her own local Section, and up to a maximum of $3,000 when inter-continental travel is required.

Procedure for Nomination and Selection

1.      The competition for the Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award will be administered by the President-Elect of the ISHR International.

2.      Nominees and nominators must be active members of the International Society for Heart Research at the time of nomination (membership application is available through the ISHR website at www.ishrworld.org).

3.      Nominations for the Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award will be sought by the President-Elect from members of the Society, through the International Council, the Editorial Board of the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, the Councils of ISHR Sections, and an open invitation on the ISHR website.

4.      Nominations will be evaluated by a multidisciplinary Selection Committee composed of at least ten individuals, representing at least four Sections of the Society, appointed by the President-Elect in consultation with the President. The Selection Committee will include the President, the President-Elect, the Editor of the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, the Secretary General, the Treasurer and at least three members of the International Council. There will be at least one representative of each of four Sections. Besides the statutory members, the President-Elect has the prerogative to appoint additional members based upon the need for scientific expertise in evaluating nominees.

5.      Members of the Selection Committee will declare any conflict of interest (or close relationship with any candidate) and the voting mechanism will be adjusted accordingly.

6.      Members of the Selection Committee will not be eligible for consideration for the Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award while serving on the Committee.

7.      The Award carries with it the requirement to attend the ISHR meeting at which the award is presented. Travel expenses will be reimbursed as described above.

8.      The recipient of any Society Award (the Outstanding Investigator Award, the Research Achievement Award or the Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award) or Lecture Award (Keith Reimer Lecture, Janice Pfeffer Lecture, President's Lecture) is ineligible to receive another Lecture or Society Award for a period of 6 years. After that period of time, the winner of the Outstanding Investigator Award will be eligible for the Research Achievement Award or the Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award and the winner of the Research Achievement Award will be eligible for the Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award; however, previous winners of the more senior awards are not eligible for the more junior awards.

9.      The amount of the Award will be reviewed periodically and determined by the Council of the ISHR.

10.  The Secretary General and Treasurer will keep a full and permanent record of nominations, elections, and results as well as of the finances of the scheme.

11.  Nominations (one per person) must include the following materials, with all documents submitted electronically as a single PDF:

·         A letter (maximum two pages) confirming the nominee’s commitment to attend the relevant ISHR meeting, if elected, and describing the nominee’s research achievements. Letters proposing a nomination are most helpful if they deal as specifically as possible with the candidate’s most important contributions to science, as well as outlining any significant career breaks. Administrative service or leadership will not be taken into account by the Selection Committee.

·         Nominee’s current curriculum vitae containing a bibliography.

·         A list of the candidate’s top 15 publications with web links.

12.  Self-nominations will not be considered.

13.  Nominations should be sent to BOTH:

Dr. Thomas Eschenhagen, Email: t.eschenhagen@uke.de and

ISHR Secretary General, Email:llobaugh@ishrworld.org
